Three blocks of Third Street in downtown Santa Monica have been closed to cars since 1965 and were rebuilt as the Third Street Promenade in 1989. Street performers work the crowds between the shops and movie theaters. Light rail trains from downtown Los Angeles have ended their run two blocks away since 2016, and the bluff-top lawns of Palisades Park overlook the ocean nearby.
